Here’s what you’ve probably been waiting for… more food posts! I must admit, Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room was the best meal we had in Savannah. Before it became a lunch hot spot, Mrs. W’s was a former boarding house so all meals are served family style. This means serve yourself (pass to the left) and bus your own darn dishes. I was looking forward to coming here from the beginning and the more I read about it, the more I wanted to come. Lemme tell you, Mrs. Wilkes did not disappoint. In the words of some lady in line with us, “if you leave this place hungry, it’s your own damn fault.” This is so true. Mrs. Wilkes’ is strictly a lunch place. They open the doors at 11:00 am and you best be in line by 10:30. I dragged K out in the cold, brisk morning to join some other folks in line at precisely 10:30. By 11:00, the line was around the corner.
Let’s get down with the nitty gritty- a lunch at Mrs. Wilkes is like Thanksgiving dinner, minus the turkey. They serve all of the best sides and the most delicious, crunchy, juicy fried chicken. Among my favorites included: okra, mashed potatoes and gravy, butter beans, collard greens, rolls, green beans, sweet tea, fried chicken, mac and cheese, black eyed peas, and squash. Let’s just say, it was almost all my favorite! If you’re in Savannah, you MUST go to Mrs. Wilkes’ for the experience and amazing low country cooking.
