Exploring a new city is always a lot of fun. Exploring a new region with wine tasting is even better. Paso Robles is full of wineries located in a very convenient area all along a wine route that spans a pretty good distance while remaining manageable. There are many to choose from and you’ll recognize more than a few larger producers whose wines can be readily purchased at your local supermarket.
We headed straight for Hug Cellars, a small producer that makes some tasty GSM blends. The first time we tried a blend from Hug was at a local restaurant where we were actually looking for a different maker, but similar blend. It was just our luck that what we were after was sold out and the owner recommended Hug. Excellent recommendation. Fast forward a half year later and we stumble across the tasting room at Hug. You can imagine how much wine we left with. The tasting room is casual, staff is excellent and friendly, and the wines are delicious. We even got a quick tour of the back room where the grapes are processed and all the magic happens. This made our trip extra special and we are definitely looking forward to returning.
After having our fill of wine all before noon, we went for a casual drive past the more remote wineries and into the countryside. It was a beautiful day, quiet, with no other cars on this small road. It was the perfect lazy day.
