Greek Salad

Greek Salad

It’s summer, the weather is warm and all I want to eat are salads. It was time to shake up our usual salad routine where I throw together whatever I have in the crisper and instead, I actually planned to make this one, kind of. […]

Garlic Shiso Cucumber Pickles

Garlic Shiso Cucumber Pickles

Summer is in full swing and my garden sure did pump out an abundance of cucumbers. This year, I decided to try my hand at growing Sumter pickling cucumbers. It was exciting to see the beginnings of tiny cucumber growth, but then, bang! One day […]

Summer Fruit Fizz

Summer Fruit Fizz

This drink was made for the summer.

See, I planned ahead this year. Sometime in the middle of spring, while walking through the local nursery, we passed by the the seed section. I looked at the seeds for watermelon, canteloupe, cucumber, … etc. and they all looked good. So like any backyard gardener I bought the seeds walked out to the back yard and tossed them into the beds with reckless abandon.

Fast forward two, maybe three months and what do you know? We have watermelon’s growing and again, like any other backyard gardener, when I see fruit growing up from the ground I think, “Hey, that would taste good with some Gin!”. So here it is, theĀ  Summer Fruit Fizz in all its glory.

Watermelon Ice:

1/3 of a small watermelon, pureed. Freeze in a savarin mold overnight or until frozen solid.

Gin mixture (yields 2 drinks):

5-6 strawberries, halved

1 oz simple syrup

juice of 1 lime

3 oz good quality gin (we used Leopolds)

1 can club soda

Muddle strawberries with simple syrup. Pour into glasses. Using the back of a spoon, slowly pour 1 1/2 oz gin into each glass, over the strawberry mixture. You want to create a separation for each layer. Slowly add club soda, half of the lime juice, and top with a frozen watermelon ring. Garnish and sip slowly.

*This drink is best enjoyed as a sipper, as the watermelon ice melts, the sweeter and colder the drink. Cheers!

Cucumber Mint Agua Fresca

Cucumber Mint Agua Fresca

This weekend was hot hot hot! Mostly, it was the humidity that made things uncomfortable. We picked the last of the cucumbers from the garden and used the ones that weren’t quite perfect for pickling in this agua fresca. In a blender, add chopped cucumber, […]
